I usually start by putting a foundation layer of paint on to the blank canvas. These days I like to pick an unusual colour depending on my mood. Then I will layer it or work on specific areas depending on the subject matter. I like the element of surprise when you get an unexpected mix when putting one layer of colour over another. A richness that is difficult to plan for.
